Where Every Dollar Goes When You Buy a Used Car in Nevada
Three kinds of money change hands when you buy a used car from a Nevada dealer. The price of the car and the doc fee are the dealer's. The sales tax belongs to the Nevada Department of Taxation. The title and registration fees belong to the DMV. Every line on your receipt should say which one it is.
Three kinds of money
Only one kind is the dealer's. Every line on the receipt is one of these three.
- The dealer'sThe price of the car and the doc fee. The only numbers the dealer sets, and the only ones it keeps.
- The state's taxNevada sales tax. The dealer collects it, holds it in trust, and sends it to the Nevada Department of Taxation.
- The state's feesTitle and registration. Title fees go to the DMV with the sale paperwork; registration you pay the DMV yourself.
The doc fee
The document fee pays for the paperwork the dealer files with the State of Nevada for you: the report of sale, the temporary placard, the title application, and keeping your file for the years the state requires.
- How muchNevada's motor vehicle law doesn't set a dollar amount for it, so it varies from dealer to dealer. Ask what it is before you visit.
- Where it goesOn its own line, named. Not folded into a line that just says fees.
- It's taxedNevada taxes it as part of the sale, so sales tax is figured on it too.
Sales tax
The rate is set by the county where the sale happens, not where you live.
- In Clark County8.375%.
- What it's onThe price of the car and the doc fee.
- What it's not onThe title fees. Nevada doesn't tax them.
Title fees at the desk
Two small state fees, set by the DMV under NRS 482.429. The dealer sends them to the DMV in Carson City with your title paperwork, and adds nothing to them.
- Certificate of title$20.00.
- Title processing fee$8.25.
- Together$28.25, the DMV's fee for a first Nevada title.
What you pay the DMV to register
In Nevada the dealer files the paperwork and you register the car, within 30 days of the sale, before your temporary placard runs out. The DMV lists its fees at dmv.nv.gov/regfees.htm.
- Basic registration fee$33.00 for a passenger car, every year.
- Governmental Services TaxEvery year. Figured from the car's original sticker price, not what you paid.
- Supplemental Governmental Services TaxEvery year, figured the same way.
- License plateOne time, if you need new plates.
- Late feesThe DMV adds penalties if you register after the deadline.
Why the DMV tax isn't based on what you paid
The Governmental Services Tax starts from 35% of the car's original sticker price (the MSRP). That value drops 5% after the first year and 10% each year after that, until it reaches its floor. The tax is 4% of the result, with a minimum of $16.
- What this meansAn older car that was expensive new can cost more to register than a newer car that was cheap new.
- Next yearThe registration fee and both Governmental Services Taxes come back every year. The plate is one time.
What to bring to register
You can often register online with the report of sale's control number. The DMV explains it at dmv.nv.gov/registervehicle.htm.
- Your Nevada auto policy card.
- Your copy of the dealer's report of sale, with its control number.
- The car's current odometer reading.
- The smog testA Nevada dealer has to give you a passing one with the car.
How we do it at Authentico
Our price is the all-in price: the doc fee is already inside the number on the car, and at the desk it sits on its own line, named. Every other line on our receipt is the state's, with who receives it written next to it. Your smog test is paid for and in your packet. Ask us where any number comes from and we'll show you the statute.
Questions people ask
What is a doc fee on a used car in Nevada?
The dealer's charge for the paperwork it files with the state for you: the report of sale, the temporary placard and the title application. It's the dealer's money, not the state's, and Nevada taxes it as part of the sale.
Is there a cap on doc fees in Nevada?
Nevada's motor vehicle law doesn't set a dollar amount for it, so it varies. Ask what it is up front and look for it on its own line.
What is the sales tax on a used car in Las Vegas?
In Clark County it's 8.375%, on the price of the car and the doc fee. The rate is set by where the sale happens, not where you live.
How much does it cost to title a car in Nevada?
A first Nevada title is $28.25: a $20 certificate of title and an $8.25 processing fee. A dealer collects them at the sale and sends them to the DMV.
Why is my registration so expensive?
Most of it is the Governmental Services Tax, which is figured from the car's original sticker price, not what you paid. It goes down each year as the car ages, to a floor.
How long do I have to register after buying from a dealer?
30 days from the sale, before your temporary placard runs out. The DMV charges late fees after that.
